This Week in Art: May 11-15, 2015

Sorry about last week's absence... I was out of the building, so our update just didn't happen. But we're back this week with more student bloggers reporting for our last few weeks of the school year! Can you believe we're almost finished with another year?

"On Thursday, we worked on our letter sculptures. We made our ombre colors look very cool by adding designs such as dots or zig zags. They seem to be going great!"

"This week we have been studying the monochromatic art style inspired by Andy Warhol's work. We all took pictures and then edited them on Photoshop to show only four shade of the same color. We transferred the outlines to paper using the transfer graphite paper and then started painting them with a color of our choice."
- Ari D, Period 4

"Well this week everybody got done with their clay projects which was AWESOME. We had to finish painting 1 to 3 coats on it, and then we had to glaze it which didn't take too long. Then we spent about a couple days on our self portrait. Today we are doing our Paper circuits project."

Lukas is making a letter "L" sculpture!

"This week we worked on block letters, or 3D letters. We first started out by doing a little practicing with drawing them. We worked on using a vanishing point, and also learned a little bit of shading of 3D objects. Then we made our work come to life, and make our written pieces into awesome cardboard letters."

Gabrielle's soda can drawing, pre-crushed state!

"This week, we started our still life project. We've been working on drawing our soda can while incorporating shadows and highlights. Wednesday, we sketched our can very carefully. On Thursday and Friday, we continued that and added some color. Soon, we will move on to our half-crushed drawing."

Kaitlin's pixel portrait, in the early stages.

"On Monday, we finished creating our clay projects. On Tuesday, we started learning about our next project the pixel portrait. The pixel portrait is a drawing that we create by coloring in squares on a grid to make it look like a picture of ourselves. For the rest of the week we began coloring in the final draft of our pixel portrait."

Jessica's Pixel Portrait is off to a great start!

"This week in art class, we were introduced to pixel portraits. We worked with adobe photo shop to edit our picture for this project. We placed a grid over our picture and then made a bigger grid with sharpie over the top. Then we took grid paper and colored in half or full squares to make it look pixely. I mixed colors to make look more like the picture."

Special thanks to Mrs. Stezowski, our PTA President, for helping to hang yet another batch of 6th grade Dale Chihuly-inspired works in the cafeteria! Each installment fills the ceiling space even more - the pictures don't do it justice. So cool!

Some of our Chihuly-inspired flowers, waiting to go up in the cafeteria!

Eek! We were so busy in art class today that we didn't get a student blogger in 6th grade! Today was our last day of art for 6th grade students in Term A. Monday through Wednesday was spent finishing up our Chihuly-inspired abstract flower sculptures, which will be strung up and hung in the cafeteria at school! You can view our Chihuly flowers on Artsonia here.

We spent Thursday and Friday uploading our final letter sculptures up to Artsonia here, and having one-on-one conferences with Mrs. Leban about our drawing challenge assignment. Students chose their favorite drawing challenge drawing to upload to our highlights gallery here on Artsonia.

7th Grade Art:
Today was the last day of art for 7th grade students in Term A. Students that completed their work early had the chance to make their artwork TALK using the Chatterpix Kids app on the art room iPads! Here's a little preview below:

"[This week,] We worked on our painting. Towards the end of the week, we did our drawing challenge conferences. Also, anyone that didn't finish their portrait had to turn it in the no matter how far they were on it."

Max is making a minion-inspired glazed ceramic mug.

"In art class this week we began doing our pixel portraits. We then moved onto glazing our mugs/monster pots. Lots of kids thought that the glaze went on after you painted but then learned that the glaze is the paint! LOL"

This Week in Art! August 25-29

Our first full week of art is over! Even though classes were short (we had extended seminar every day), we made a lot of awesome art. This week I have some guest blog posters in the form of student volunteers from 7th and 8th grade who are going to tell you about what we did in art class this week! Thanks for all of your help guys!

This was a very busy week! Besides working on our daily sketches, we began making block letter sculptures! Today we just started to work on paper mache! We'll have to try to finish it up next week amidst MAP testing, which means we'll only have art class for one day next week. But, we'll try our best!

"This week we started everyday by taking 10 minutes to do the drawing challenge. Then over the week we worked on photo shop to create a picture that we then printed. We are still working on graphiting our picture and some of us are tracing our pictures now."
-Andrea G, period 4

These large self-portraits are going to be painted in a monochromatic color scheme. They are MUCH larger than last year's paintings, so I'm excited about how cool they'll look hanging up in the school!

"Monday and Tuesday, we got to plan a big clay project. We had the option of choosing between making a monster pot, a coffee mug, or a box with words on it that was inspired by a art piece made by Robert Indiana. Wednesday, we got to draw out our plan that we were going to make out of clay later in the week. Thursday, we started working with clay and forming the basic shapes of our project. Finally, today we are finishing up forming the shape so we can fire it in the kiln."
